Icehotel is in Jukkasjärvi, a village in Swedish Lapland about 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, near Kiruna.
Each winter it is built anew from ice cut from the Torne River. Artists from many countries design individual art suites, so the hotel is never the same twice. When spring comes, it melts back into the river.
Part of the property stays frozen all year. A permanent building, cooled with solar power, keeps its ice suites cold through the summer. Warm rooms and cabins stand nearby, and on clear winter nights the northern lights are often overhead.
